More Beano things

Typical, isn't it? I spend weeks looking through all my stuff for amusing alternative takes on the Beano, spend an evening posting them all up here, then two days later a couple more turn up. Not to worry though, because here they are. And they're both (sort of) the fault of Kev F. Sutherland.

Back in the early 1990s, Mr. Sutherland ran a comic called UT. One of the "regular things" about the comic (and one which may ultimately've led to its demise) was the back cover being an upside-down parody of another comic or magazine, such as Hello!, Shoot or, in this case, The Beano. And a fairly convincing knock-up it is, too:

That particular cover leads into a typically surreal (and VERY un-Beano-ish) episode of Funny Bunnies by Phil Baber. Just for the fun of it all, here it is:

The next item is also from a Kev Sutherland product (and POSSIBLY drawn by him too). It's from the first issue of Zig and Zag's Zogazine, a comic based on that puppet duo (obviously), with each issue following a loose theme. For the first issue, that theme was comics, and one of the features is this nice spread, titled Zig and Zag's Wacky World of Comics. Not only does it feature a Beano spoof, it also satirizes The Dandy, The Topper, 2000AD, Action Comics, The Fantastic Four, EagleThe Amazing Spider-Man and even Viz!

Click on it to read it "properly", of course.

Oh, and now that I've done this, logic dictates I'll find more takes on the  Beano within the week.

  1. Great "sound effects" in that Bunnies comic.

  3. If you can find a copy of the Goodies' Book of Criminal Records anywhere, there's an extended (and pretty convincing) parody of children's comics in there called 'Goody Goody - the comic for NICE children'. I think Graeme Garden did most of the artwork. Also, in the Goodies episode '2001 and a Bit', Tim says "In my day it was the Beano and the Dandy - nowadays it's the Porno and Randy! They've given Biffo the 'bare' a whole new dimension!"

    1. I'll have a look out for the Goodies book, cheers for that. Really getting into the Goodies lately, even though I've only seen Kitten Kong, Scatty Safari and Scoutrageous (which is a work of genius).

  4. Re: Zig and Zag Zogazine

Billy the Splat? Well that's a blunder, because Billy the Cat was in the Beano, not the Dandy. If they're going to parody it, it would help if they don't mix them up.

    1. Maybe they couldn't think of a pun on Korky? You'll notice they've got Bully Beef & Chips as Viz characters as well, don't think they're going for deeply cutting satire here - just a laugh.

    2. Or the comparatively innocuous Bully Beef & Chips have replaced Biffa Bacon?

    3. You haven't seen the earlier Bully Beef & Chips stuff then! Especially Sid Burgon's stuff in the 1980s, where he made Chips equally as violent as Bully Beef.

    4. It's still comparatively innocuous, so the joke, if it is to be taken in that way, still stands. In the 80s, does Bully Beef strike Chips with "tremendous force" using a sledge? Does he take him to a bottle bank and and smash so many bottles in his face that he's ultimately up to his neck in broken glass? And are we shown Bully Beef's home life where he's subjected to disturbing-when-you-think-about it levels of abuse from his parents?

    5. It's alright, I get the joke - I'm just saying that Beefy and Chips have their own enjoyable levels of violence.
