Balls (ha ha etc)

Just a quick note/link thing here...

In seeking out and being equally entertained and depressed by all these not-quite-Viz comics, there's always going to be some that are inaccessible to my own self. Some, like Klam, because of their absurdly low print runs, and others - well, others because I just can't be bothered with them, because I know I won't enjoy them so hardly seem worth the effort. The Winebibber was partially an exception to this, because it was so odd that it'd be a shame not to make others suffer through it, and others...

Yeah, football ones. Three such "big ones" exist, namely The Onion Bag, Sweet FA and C'mon Ref. In the comments section of the Spit! write-up, Rob Filth and Lew Stringer spoke of their experiences working on C'mon Ref which put me off the idea of seeking out issues even MORE than the fact that my interest in football is residual at best. But still, curiosity and all that...

No need now anyway, wait long enough and the Internet's bound to throw up something. Ben Baker has recently done an article about all three of these pitiful-sounding rags, saving me some money and satiating my curiosity at the same time. Go and read it by clicking on the big red words: HERE

  1. Hmm, I did post a message but it seems to have vanished. Much appreciated anyway. I could've gone more in depth with these three having a bunch of issues still upstairs but I just couldn't face it. Not least of all because its twenty bloody years ago. Welp. I sort of miss being able to name more than three current footballers but not enough to actually watch the damn game, obviously...

    1. I can still remember a few names from the 1994 LFC squad, but that's not much help in today's world. The people I work with enjoy it, so I hear it every so often on the radio and can currently, off the top of my head name... THREE players! And also know who TWO of those play for. Success!

I'd happily go into "more depth" with these things if I had access to them - they'd be well looked after and returned as soon as they were done with, etc

    2. I need to have a good scanning session soon. I'll add them to the pile. Least I can do for the horrors you've waded through for this blog. :)

  2. Out of the 3 I had only heard of C'mon Ref, so thanks for the info. and thanks for the link.

  3. I think I saw a newsprint, "bantery" footie mag in London last month (the WH Smith in the King's Cross concourse, to be precise). I might go and buy it next weekend, though I doubt it's a Viz-a-like. Probably more like a football version of Private Eye (which might be no bad thing, what with allegations of match-fixing and countries buying the right to host major tournaments).

    1. Yeah, there's a few of them still about, mostly only sold in the towns the clubs-of-focus are based in as well, which is nice. We have at least one here, called The Kop (imaginatively enough), it even has an annual and everything. Ben mentions a few of them in his article there (the monster truck one sounds like a good read, sort of).

Private Eye has a sports section each fortnight, but it can be hard to keep up with all the nonsense that goes on nowadays!
