Seeing as how Bob Dewar's so fantastic and everything, here's some more of his stuff - all of this is from the 1993 Beano book (as in, from 1992). Possibly my favourite Beano book ever, along with the 1990 and 1992 ones... It's like Sophie's Choice, really!
He has a LOT of pages in this book:
For those not "in the know", scanning annuals is HARD.
And here's Bob Dewar's first ever interview from earlier this year, thanks to Adam Smith for the link:
You're spoiling us, Mr. Ambassador. Great stuff.
ReplyDeleteFantastic! The amount of output Dewar did for DC Thomson (a great deal of it fully painted) in the 80s and 90s especially is astounding. He work always veers brilliantly back and forth between ultra mod cute and sadistically anarchic..
ReplyDeleteHere are links to 2 autobiograpnical books he wrote and illustrated recently, reminices of this life growing up: they're kind of aimed at the museum gift shop market , but the art is astounding (and how many other D. C. Thomson artists got to write their own memoirs?.. I can only think of Leo Baxendale otherwise) - I'd recommend anyone interested in Dewars art order them as soon as they can! http://bobdewar.net/?page_id=81
I can't think of any others either... Although I think Dave Sutherland may have a good book in him, somehow.
DeleteI remember that annual! Thanks for the (re)enlightenment. I think I detect the hand of Bob on a few cracking Bash Street Kids postcards (which are reprinted in the 2001 BSK summer special), I wish I could remember where I first saw them...
ReplyDeleteWow, Bash Street Kids postcards? I think I've got the 2001 Summer Special somewhere, if I have I'll get those reprints up here pronto.
DeleteTurns out they're not postcards, but full-page illustrations in the BSK annual 1994. At least I think they're by Bob. I wondered if it might be Tom Paterson, but the lettering is much more like BD's.
