The Beano Boys

Just something quick here - I was going to save it until February but odds are I'd've forgotten about it, or even lost it by then, so it's here now instead. From a 1987 issue of Escape ("The Modern Guide to Comics and More") is this obituary piece on Mr. Ken Reid, with tributes from Leo Baxendale, Pat Mills, Savage Pencil, Davy Francis, Kevin O'Neill, Robert Nixon, Alan Moore and Lew Stringer.

From the same two page spread, there's also a mini interview with Leo Baxendale, talking about taking DC Thomson to court, and a few of his other (at the time) current projects.

Just in case anyone's interested, like.

  1. Thanks for posting this. In his piece Pat Mills wrongly states that Ken Reid illustrated Georgie's Germs which he never did. Pat Mills must be confusing it with the Nervs.

    1. You're right - he often gets the two confused. I remember him doing the same on a radio podcast several years ago.

  2. Thanks for posting this by the way. Do all the issues of Escape cover British comics?

    1. There doesn't seem to be any protocol for what they cover - just any comics from all over the world! The issue these pages are from (Number 11) also features Superman, Moebius, George Herriman's Krazy Kat, Halo Jones, Brian Bolland, Lorenzo Mattoti... There's around 30-40 pages worth of comics in each issue, as well as features. Worth looking out for!

  3. Who wouldn't be interested in Reid or Baxendale, THB? Great stuff.
